How to add GPSR information to Shopify product pages
Step by step: collect manufacturer and responsible-person details, add warnings, and show them on Shopify product pages with metafields or with an app.

Adding the GPSR information to a Shopify store takes three steps: collect the details for each product, store them in one place, and show them on the product page. This guide goes through each step and the two common ways of doing it: with Shopify’s own metafields, or with an app.
What the information has to contain is covered in GPSR requirements for Shopify product pages. Here the focus is on doing it.
Step 1: Collect the details per brand
Most of the data belongs to the brand or manufacturer, not to the single product. Collect it once per brand:
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer: name or trade mark, postal address, e-mail or website | Article 19(a) |
| If the manufacturer is outside the EU: the responsible person in the EU with name, postal address and e-mail or website | Article 19(b) |
| For each product: a model name or number, and a batch or serial number where the product has one | Article 19(c) |
| For each product: every warning and piece of safety information from the packaging, in the language of each market | Article 19(d) |
| A written confirmation from the supplier | Article 12(1): as a reseller you check before you offer the product |
A spreadsheet with one row per brand is enough. The details of the responsible person often come from the same supplier.
Step 2, route A: store and show it with metafields
This route needs no app. It suits a small catalogue.
- Create the fields. In the Shopify admin open Settings, Custom data, Products and add a definition for each piece of information, for example “Manufacturer”, “Responsible person in the EU” and “Warnings”. A multi-line text type works for addresses.
- Fill them in. Open each product and complete the metafields in its Metafields section.
- Show them. In the theme editor open your product template, add a text or rich text block and connect its text setting to the metafield with the dynamic source picker. Repeat for each field and save. Shopify’s documentation on dynamic sources describes which metafield types fit which settings.
- Translate. Translate the values for each language of your store with the translation tool you use.
- Check. Open a product page in every language and look for each of the four points.
If your theme is an older one without dynamic sources, write the same text into the product description instead.
Where it gets hard. The same manufacturer is typed into every product. When an address changes, each product has to be edited. A new product has no data until someone remembers. Nothing tells you which products are missing a field.
Step 2, route B: store and show it with GPSR Compliance Manager
The app keeps the details in one place and publishes them through a theme block. The guided setup takes about 15 minutes.
- Install the app from the Shopify App Store. The setup guides you through the next steps.
- Create the entities once. Under Manage Entities, click Add New Entity for each manufacturer, responsible person and importer: name, address, e-mail and website.
- Assign them to products. Open a product in Manage Products and choose the manufacturer and, where needed, the responsible person. The page has a live preview of what shoppers will see. A product counts as having GPSR data once a manufacturer is chosen.
- Add the safety information. Add standard hazard and precautionary statements or the ten EN 71 toy warnings, which exist in every EU language, or write your own warnings and translate them.
- Add the widget. Under Widget setup, click Install complete widget, place the GPSR Compliance block in the theme editor and save. It needs an Online Store 2.0 theme. The widget follows the language the shopper browses your store in.
- Fill the rest of the catalogue. In Bulk Manage Products you can paste manufacturer columns from a spreadsheet or use Edit all matching to set the same manufacturer on every product of a vendor, a collection or a tag. Under Automated Rules, a rule assigns the entities by vendor to new and updated products as well.
On the free plan you add the data one product at a time and have one automated rule. Bulk editing and CSV import of entities are part of GPSR Basic and GPSR Pro, unlimited rules of GPSR Pro. The documentation has a page for each step.
The app stores and shows what you enter. It does not check whether the information is complete or correct under the GPSR, and it is not legal advice.
Which route fits
| Metafields | App | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | None beyond your time | Free plan, paid plans from the Shopify App Store |
| Setup | An afternoon for a handful of products | About 15 minutes for the first products |
| Same manufacturer on many products | Typed into each product | Created once, assigned in bulk or by rule |
| Changing an address | Edit every product | Edit the entity once |
| New products | Someone has to remember | An automated rule can fill them |
| Standard hazard statements in every language | Written and translated by you | Included |
For a few products the by-hand route is fine. When the catalogue grows past what you can check by eye, the repetition is what costs time and causes mistakes.
After setup
- Open one product per brand in each language and look for the four points.
- Keep the supplier confirmations with the date.
- Review the data when a supplier, an address or a product changes.
- Check new products: in the app, the manufacturer column in Bulk Manage Products shows every product and an empty cell shows a dash.
