GPSR compliance check failed: what it means and how to fix it

A marketplace says your listing failed the GPSR compliance check. What the message points to, which data is usually missing, and how to fix it at the source.

“GPSR compliance check failed” is a message from a sales channel, most often an online marketplace, saying that a listing does not show the product-safety information the GPSR asks for. It is not an official EU message and it does not mean a fine. It means the marketplace has blocked or hidden the listing until the data is added.

The marketplace applies Article 19 of the General Product Safety Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2023/988. The article is covered in GPSR requirements for Shopify product pages; the rule applies in the same way to an online shop and to a listing on a marketplace.

What the check looks for

A marketplace can only test what it can see in a listing. The checks follow the four points of Article 19(1):

Point What is checked
Manufacturer Name or trade mark, postal address and electronic address
Responsible person in the EU Name, postal address and electronic address, when the manufacturer is outside the EU
Product identification Picture, type and an identifier such as a model number
Warnings and safety information Present where the product needs them, in a language of the market

Marketplaces differ in their forms, field names and in which categories they check. Read the notice in your seller account rather than relying on a general list: it normally names the product and the point that failed.

The usual causes

  1. The manufacturer’s contact details are partial. A company name without a postal address or an e-mail address does not meet Article 19(a).
  2. The responsible person is missing. The manufacturer is outside the EU, and no responsible person is named. The responsible person can be an importer or an authorised representative (Article 16, with Regulation (EU) 2019/1020, Article 4).
  3. The responsible person is filled in when it is not needed. If the manufacturer is established in the EU, there is no separate responsible person under point (b), and a wrong entry can cause a mismatch.
  4. Warnings are missing. The packaging carries warnings that the listing does not repeat.
  5. The data differs between channels. The same product shows one address on your shop and another on the marketplace, and nobody noticed.

How to fix it

  1. Open the notice. In the seller account, find the list of affected products and the reason given for each.
  2. Take the data from the product, not from memory. Check the packaging and the supplier’s written confirmation. If the supplier has not given you the manufacturer’s postal and electronic address, ask for them in writing.
  3. Fix every product of the same brand at once. The cause is rarely one listing. If one manufacturer’s details are wrong, they are wrong for every listing that uses them.
  4. Resubmit and keep the proof. Save the date, the notice and what you changed.
  5. Compare with your shop. The product page in your own store has to show the same details.

Keep one source of truth

The most common reason for a recurring failure is that the same data is typed in several places: your shop, each marketplace and a spreadsheet. When an address changes in one of them, the others fall behind.

If your main shop runs on Shopify, GPSR Compliance Manager can be the place where the verified manufacturer and responsible-person details are kept once and shown on the product page through a theme block. The same data is then ready to copy into a marketplace form. The app only publishes to your Shopify store; it does not change listings on other channels, and it does not check whether the information is complete or correct under the GPSR. The first-steps page of the documentation walks through the setup.

Questions to ask your supplier

  • Who is the manufacturer, with postal and electronic address?
  • Is the manufacturer established in the EU? If not, who is the responsible person, with their postal and electronic address?
  • Which warnings and safety information are on the product, the packaging or the documents?
  • Can you confirm this in writing?

Under Article 12(1), a reseller has to verify that the manufacturer and, where there is one, the importer have done their part before offering the product.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the message "GPSR compliance check failed" come from?

From the sales channel that shows it, usually an online marketplace. It is not an official message of the EU. The marketplace checks the listing against the information Article 19 GPSR asks for and blocks or hides the listing when something is missing.

Which data is usually missing?

Most often the manufacturer's postal address or electronic address, the responsible person in the EU for a manufacturer outside the EU, or the warnings and safety information. The notice in your seller account normally names the product and the field.

Do I need a responsible person if the manufacturer is in the EU?

No. Article 19(b) applies when the manufacturer is not established in the EU. If the manufacturer is in the EU, the manufacturer's own details are what the listing needs.

Does GPSR Compliance Manager fix a failed marketplace listing?

No. The app publishes the information on your Shopify store. It does not change listings on Amazon, eBay or other marketplaces. It can be the place where you keep the verified data once, which you then copy into the marketplace.
